Frequently Asked Questions: Troubleshooting Tips

Please contact the local distributor in your country or us anytime at 408-453-4151 or send an email to support@aquavistainc.com.  Here are some of the most common questions that we receive.

I put in my fish and they all died.

Make sure that you treated the water with water conditioner if you are using tap water.  You should always start with only 1-2 fish when cycling the aquarium.  If you add more than 2 fish, your aquarium may have experienced an ammonia spike, which occurs when excess waste is being produced in the aquarium before the beneficial bacteria has established itself.  Change 30% of the water and try again!  This time with only 1-2 fish.

I am experiencing excessive algae growth in my aquarium, what can I do?

Algae growth is typically caused by sunlight and excess feeding/nutrients.  Make sure your aquarium is not exposed to direct sunlight or in an overly naturally lit room.  Do not overfeed the fish (one time per day is more than enough).  Keep the light in your aquarium off for less time in the day.  To remove algae, use the algae scraper that is included with your AV500 aquarium.  You should replace the filter and do a 1 gallon water change every 2 – 3 weeks until the aquarium starts to clear up.  Adding a plecostomus or other algae eating fish can also help.

My Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium is leaking.

Don’t panic!  The Aquavista aquariums are made from high quality tempered glass.  If you are experiencing leaking upon set up, there may have been damage during shipping.  Please contact us, so we can help you troubleshoot.

My Aquavista 500 or Aquavista 100 Aquarium is leaking.

Don’t panic!  The Aquavista aquariums are made from ABS plastic mold injection, so it is virtually leak and shatterproof.  We have never had any aquarium have structural issues that lead to leaking.  Try to turn off the aquarium to see if it still leaks after 15 minutes.  Most likely it will stop.

Any leaking is usually caused by the flow of the water and can be diagnosed to one of the following:

Leaking from Left Side: The Aquavista 100 and 500 have built in overflow protection.  If you fill up the water above the MAX line, it is possible that the water will start to drip down the left side to avoid the water from getting into the components on the right.

Leaking Down Wall: Make sure the flow diverter is connected snugly and that you are using the splash guard that is included with each unit.  This prevents splashing of the water to the lid and leaking down the wall.  Make sure there are no bioballs obstructing the flow of the water and to replace the filter sponge in the filter tray every 6-8 weeks.  If the filter sponge gets dirty, the water will flow into the aquarium slower, thus causing the water to flow through the holes in the splash guard and touching the lid and then dripping back down the wall.

Water Evaporation:  It is common to have to add 2-3 cups of water per week into the aquarium due to the evaporation of the water to keep the water level high.  This is caused by the rapid flow of our filter which leads to better oxidation and water conditions for the fish.

My aquarium will not turn on!

(1) Make sure that the aquarium is plugged in and that the aquarium power is on.

(2) The aquariums all come with fuses to protect the aquarium’s electrical components.  Changing the fuse is easy and can be downloaded here.

My aquarium temperature is above what I set it at.

The Aquavista Wall Aquarium has a heater built in, but it does not serve as a chiller.  Therefore, it will keep the water temperature above what it is programmed but will not lower the temperature if it is above.  It is normal for the aquarium water to read a few degrees above room temperature due to the light and water pump.

My aquarium light needs to be replaced.  Where can I buy it?
